The growth of urban populations
and the worsening of environmental and social crises have led to a need for internal urban development, requiring particular attention to existing buildings, infrastructure, and neglected urban areas. A transcalar approach and a global understanding of resources are essential, demanding precise architectural responses that integrate regeneration, reuse, and reprogramming at the material, architectural, urban, and regional scales. We must go beyond traditional practices to adopt a holistic mindset and consider the urban environment as a source of materials and uses. We need to take into account resource management, carbon and energy impact, while promoting collective decision-making. Urban transformation must not only address the need for densification but also shape cities to meet social, cultural, environmental, and economic challenges, drawing inspiration from vernacular traditions and adopting circular, non-extractive practices.

Context - The urban area of Plantin, located in Meyrin, directly beneath the flight path of Geneva Airport, has been the subject of demolition requests for several years. The area, designated for industrial and artisanal use, also hosts individual houses in its northern part. With a ceiling height between four and ten meters and subject to high air and noise pollution, the area is set to retain this designation. To the north, dl-a, designlab-architecture, and IttenBrechbühl propose a project for workshops for SMEs and artisans, while to the south, Groupe-H plans the construction of a hardware and gardening store.

The alternative project proposes the redevelopment and expansion of the existing buildings on the southern plot to create a cantonal center for the development of reuse in the construction industry through four main programs: a compressed earth brick (BTC) factory, a materials reuse center, a workshop space for SMEs and artisans, and a training center for apprentices and professionals.
