Truckers have strict working reglementations having them taking rest stops regularly: 45 minutes every 4 hours and half. It’s also forbidden for them to drive between 10pm and 5am. Resting areas are important so drivers can park safely, go to the bathrooms, walks and rest. "Short stop areas » are not resting areas. It’s parking space to stop in case your freight is not ready to be taken or receive. They are usually just parking spots on the side of the road or in industrial hub. The problem is that truckers wait in average 2 hours and half before collecting or delivering their freight, which time they spend alone and in their trucks, in not so friendly environnement.

Truckers are an isolated and forgotten workers categories. But they matter just as much as others workers, and their needs are to be taken to consideration. Also, trucks are massive, and not designing adequate space for it lead to lot of lost space and bad urban management in industrial hubs.
Birsfelden is a major harbour in Basel, and its water transportation system, being part of Upper Rhine Ports is well manage, but the urban management lack of care for trucks, leading to them waiting in non appropriate place. The idea of this project is to create a space for truckers, with all the facilities necessary to their well being, including a system to distribute better the freight through the zone. Being able to let your truck in security will lead to a more peaceful social interaction between truckers, but also a better road management through the zone, so the space wan without the parking spot will be use for other users.

The project is taking place on a non build parcel in Birsfelden. The building is a double 8-shape, going both 12 meters into the earth and up in the sky. Every shape comes from technical informations such as the minimum turning angle of the trucks, the maximum slop for them to go down etc. Since these informations gave a very large shape causing empty space in the middle, the free space will be use as green space and building with facility such as bathrooms, showers, cafeterias etc for truckers, but also a walking path going up the ramp and leading to a coffee space open for truckers, other workers of Borsfelden and the general public. Another point of such a massive infrastructure is to communicate on logistics job, a necessary field that leak new working force.
